First Grade

Lower School Academics

The first grade program focuses on the academic development and building of confidence for each child through a flexible block schedule where team teaching occurs. Within the language arts block, guided reading, word study based on Words Their Way, DeNealian handwriting, and literacy centers are included. Writing workshop is designed to encourage creativity and experiences with reading, writing, spelling, and phonics in a risk-free environment. Everyday Math provides hands-on experiences to teach concepts and a spiraling review for regular rehearsal of previously learned material. Social studies and science themes are interspersed throughout the year and are taught through literature and enriched through technology. The first grade Nature-Enhanced Approach to Learning (NEAL) is a cross-curricular program.
