Second graders are provided many opportunities to practice and extend developing skills. The language arts program includes whole group literature studies as well as small group guided reading lessons, which focus on a variety of genres of literature and specific reading skills. Writing workshop is a continued component of the language arts program, and through mini-lessons, there is direct instruction on composition and mechanics of writing. Small group spelling lessons follow the Words Their Way work-study program. The Chicago Everyday Math Program promotes critical thinking in solving problems. Science and social studies concepts are taught using a hands-on approach supported by a variety of literature and field trips. Topics include geology, weather, map skills, Native Americans, and communities.
