The overarching goal of the third grade program is to allow students to use the skills developed in earlier grades to stretch their wings and experience the wealth of knowledge available to them. The literature-based program encompasses and provides cross-curricular activities in the areas of science, social studies, math, and fine arts. Literature circles are introduced in language arts, where small groups practice comprehension strategies, discuss the authors’ purposes for writing, and develop vocabulary. Publishing parties are held to share genres of writing completed by the students in writing workshop and to celebrate completion of writing projects. Problem solving remains the center of the math program with student use of the Smart Board to help find solutions to problems. Some of the highlights in third grade include the class play, NEAL colonial gardening, a field trip to Colonial Williamsburg, bridge building, and book publishing. All of these foster skill development and core knowledge while reaching a broad range of learning styles. All activities in third grade are infused with teamwork, attention to individual needs, and the joys of learning.
