Powhatan’s admissions philosophy is inclusive rather than exclusive. We feel an obligation to serve as many students and abilities as our resources and mission will permit. Therefore, there is a wide range of abilities represented in a typical class at Powhatan. In the context of being sensitive to the individual needs and learning styles of all of our students, we enroll students who are able to progress above grade level in one or more disciplines as well as students who require a challenging program coupled with individual attention. We enroll students who will benefit from our individualized approach to instruction. We believe that this academic diversity is healthy and that we can serve the different needs of our students if we keep the individual uppermost in our minds.
The most important consideration for admission to Powhatan is the student’s ability to enjoy personal and academic success in our environment. As a community and family school, we are committed to improving access to our school while continuing to serve the families who have supported us through the years. While priority in the admissions process is given to qualified siblings of current or past students and to qualified children of alumni, we work diligently to admit students with no previous connection to the school. Broadened access is vital to our ongoing success. Implicit in serving this wider range of constituents is a commitment to provide financial aid to families not in a position to pay all fees.
Powhatan believes that multicultural diversity within the school creates the richest possible climate for learning and prepares students best for the world in which they live. Thus, we seek a student body that, as nearly as possible, reflects the socio-economic and ethnic composition of our surrounding communities.
