Powhatan Parents’
Association (PPA)
Get Involved!
Welcome to the Powhatan Parents’ Association! All Powhatan parents are members of the PPA and are encouraged to become involved in any way they can – by attending meetings, by volunteering on one of the many PPA committees, by participating in a fundraiser, or by sharing their ideas and expertise in the classroom. The following links contain important information, describing the many facets of the PPA.
- What is the PPA?
- The PPA was established in 1982 to help promote better communication between the school and parents, to help in developing enrichment programs for the students and parents, to provide volunteer support in many aspects of school life, and to assist the school in raising money.
- What is the “Power of the PPA”?
- Every year the PPA works very hard to accentuate the Powhatan experience for our children. Whether we’re volunteering in the classroom, instilling in our children the importance of getting involved in community service, or participating in one of the many fundraisers throughout the year, we are committed to making each year a more positive experience than the last.
One of our main goals is to raise money, through several annual fundraisers, to benefit the school – and ultimately our children. Every year we contribute $25,000 to the school’s operating budget. In addition, in our final PPA meeting of the school year, we vote to purchase items from the Teachers’ Wish List.
In the past two years, the PPA has voted to purchase twelve Smart Boards, state-of-the-art interactive white boards that bring modern technology to the big screen. We have also purchased uniforms and equipment for several sports teams, a portable sound system, calculators, books, musical instruments, several laptops, computer monitors, and printers, mineral and rock sets, etc. The list goes on and on… It gives us great pleasure to support the teachers’ efforts in accentuating our children's education.
In addition, the PPA started saving money in 2004 for additional playground equipment to supplement the beloved “big toy”. With a loan from the Board of Trustees, our dream became a reality in October 2005 with the installation of our new playground.
This is the power of the PPA – parents, teachers, and administrators working together to make a difference in the lives of Powhatan’s children.
