Kindergarten Author Study
“We are all currently authors through our daily Writing Workshop,” says Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Warren. “Author study complements our literature-based curriculum.”
“Through class literature study and free reading at home, Kindergarten students are exposed to a number of different authors and genres,” says Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Scheulen. “They each then pick an author, gather biographical information about the author, and share with the class. Some make posters as visual aids, some will dress up as a character from their favorite book, and it is fun to see the different types of creative presentations the students come up with.”
Presentations are made over a three day period in January that culminate in a presentation by each student to their classmates. Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Warren comments, “it is the first oral presentation of their Powhatan experience.”
Added Mrs. Scheulen, “It is neat that they begin to make presentations around the same time as the 8th graders are starting their Chapel Talks. Chapel Talk is a 9 minute speech to the entire student body by each 8th grade student as a capstone to their Powhatan education.
