The 2010-2011 school year marks the beginning of the 19th and final year at the helm for Headmaster John Lathrop, who will retire in June. During his tenure Lathrop has overseen a 50% increase in enrollment, the growth of the endowment, significant expansion of the campus physical plant, and recognition of Powhatan as the finest school in the Winchester area. “It has always been my goal to provide unequaled education for young people of the Winchester area,” says Lathrop, reflecting on his 19 years as Headmaster. “We do it through a rigorous academic program taught by caring and professional educators using the latest teaching techniques with the most up-to-date materials in fabulous facilities. It has been a labor of love.”

The new school year will kick off with the annual PPA Family Picnic sponsored by the Powhatan Parents Association scheduled for Thursday, September 2nd starting at 5:30 PM.  This annual event is a way for all Powhatan families and faculty to enjoy a fun evening together with food, games, and music.  Another event that many in the community look forward to is the annual rummage sale which is held every year on the Powhatan School campus.  This year’s rummage sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 23rd from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Established in 1948, Powhatan is an independent K-8 Day School accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools.  Limited space is still available in kindergarten through 5th grade.  Please contact Mike Hatfield, Director of Admission, at (540) 837-1009 for further information.
