Summer Camp
Powhatan Summer Camps 2011
The following are descriptions of the camps being offered this summer at Powhatan. Please note that some camps have age requirements. The Session the camp is offered and corresponding dates are listed in parentheses, followed by instructors’ names. GENERAL CAMPS
Cooking on the Farm at Smith Meadows Kitchen
(ALL DAY Session One June 20 – June 24) Nancy Polo
Open to Rising 3rd – 6th graders. Limited to 12 campers.
Cooking on the Farm at Smith Meadows Kitchen will focus on meal creation with sustainable and local ingredients. The program will involve walking around the farm and working in a small kitchen garden each day. The children will create a portfolio of recipes, learn basic kitchen techniques, and make journal entries daily. Camp will culminate with a team challenge to create a meal.
A complete curriculum for this course will be published on-line.
Note: This camp takes place off campus. Bus transportation is provided each day to and from the camp.
Detective Camp
(A.M. Session One June 20 – June 24) Ryan Gilpin
Open to Rising 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Limited to 15 campers.
Detective Camp will offer campers the opportunity to explore mysteries through reading, writing, and engaging in science activities. Individualized attention will be given to each camper for reading and writing support. Outdoor playtime and lunchtime will be included.
Adventures in ART
(A.M. Session One June 20 – June 24) Alice Rodway
Open to Rising 1st – 6th graders. Limited to 25 campers.

Art in the Afternoon with Alice
(P.M. Session One June 20 – June 24) Alice Rodway
Open to Rising 1st – 6th graders. Limited to 25 campers.
Campers will focus on making mosaics with everything you can imagine from rice and beans to toothpicks, yarn and shells. Each day will result in a new project to bring home.
Mural Camp
(A.M. Session Two June 27 – July 1) Ryan Royston
Open to Rising 1st – 6th graders
A beautiful, colorful, and messy week designing and painting a mural. Work will be done outdoors on giant sheets of plywood. Dress appropriately in clothes that can get paint-spattered!
Masks From Around the World
(P.M. Session Two June 27 – July 1) Pam Shockey
Open to Rising 1st – 6th graders. Limited to 20 campers.
Children will learn the history behind Chinese New Year, African, and Mexican masks. They will create their own masks based on examples shown in class. Two will be created using heavy colored paper, oil pastels, and marker, and one using paper maché, then painted.
Shadow Puppetry
(A.M. Session Three July 5 – July 8 ) Jackie Brondstater and April Burke
Open to Rising 2nd – 6th graders. Limited to 20 campers.
This camp will integrate literature, writing, art, and drama. Campers will explore fables, folktales, fairy tales, and poetry. Following the reading of numerous stories and poems, groups will choose their favorites to rewrite as plays. Shadow puppets of the characters and background scenery for the settings will be designed and created. Campers will coordinate and rehearse performances of the plays using shadow puppets. The camp will conclude with performances for the other campers. Ask any Powhatan second grader how much fun this is!
Scrapbooking with Jenny
(P.M. Session Three July 5 – July 8) Jenny Kronfeld
Open to Rising 1st – 6th graders. Limited to 15 campers.
Your child will experience the satisfaction of photo scrapbooking, the importance of journaling, and the excitement of creating their own photo album. Send your child with a number of theme-related photos of friends, pets, vacations, or sports. We will provide the album and all materials needed to create a scrapbook full of memories!
SPORTS CAMPS (Lead by Chris Northrup)
All Sports Camps are open to Rising 1st – 6th graders. Come play!
Multi-Sport Camp
(A.M. Sessions One, Two, and Three)
Here is a chance to learn new skills in all sorts of activities from archery and wall climbing to t-ball and flag football. Campers will take a hike on the Appalachian Trail for an afternoon.
Fundamentals of Soccer
(P.M. Sessions One and Three)
Practice your soccer skills or learn to kick the ball for the first time. A great camp for refining your techniques for the Fall Soccer Season!
Fundamentals of Basketball
(P.M. Session Two June 27 – July 1)
Start developing your court skills now for future NCAA tournaments! This is the place for practicing dribbling and shooting with individualized attention. Pump up your energy level and get ready to play!
Powhatan Kindergarten Camp
(August 15th-19th 9am-1pm)
Come spend a week with us getting to know Kindergarten a little early! Campers will have fun meeting each other and getting acquainted with Powhatan and their new teachers for next year. A day full of learning, exploring, and playing together will give your child a great preview of their exciting school year to come!
